May is American Stroke Month and I am personally passionate about stroke awareness and prevention. 21 years ago, my father survived a massive stroke and it forever changed the course of my family's life. As a result of his stroke, he is permanently disabled and has aphasia, a communication disorder affecting his ability to read, write and speak. He can no longer work, and receives care on a daily basis.

Stroke is the #3 cause of death in NJ but it is largely preventable, treatable and beatable. Heart disease and stroke are still the No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death in America. The American Heart Association has funded more than $4.1 billion in research since 1949. We have come so far but there is more work to do to prevent and treat stroke.
